About this site

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness covers more than a million acres of lakes, rivers, and forest along Minnesota's border with Canada — and getting there starts with picking one of its sixty-plus entry points. If you can't decide where to begin, this site spins a paddle and picks one for you.

Filter by how you want to travel — paddling the classic canoe routes, the few motor-permitted lakes, or the trails for backpacking and hiking like the Kekekabic, Border Route, or Powwow — and by which side of the wilderness you're starting from. The West side launches near Ely and Crane Lake; the East side launches up the Gunflint Trail from the North Shore. Each spin gives you an entry point number, name, daily quota, ranger district, and a short note about what makes that area worth visiting.

Permits are issued by the U.S. Forest Service through recreation.gov. Always confirm current rules, quotas, and fire restrictions with the Superior National Forest before your trip.
